I have a rare vintage car. I drive it all the time. I had it painted, and see the damage that comes from use. I do not care and I accept wear and tear as a constant challenge. A car that is loved must be well used; it must be driven. Some may want their cars pristine; my challenge is to use it as a CAR.

I have several common economy cars. I drive them infrequently. Their paint is peeling, replaced by rust and dents, and any damage that occurs from my use is far outweighed by the years of neglect suffered at the hands of previous owners. I do not care and I accept repairs on a shoestring budget as a constant challenge. A car that is loved must be kept running; it must be fixed. Some may want their cars to have a modicum of comfort, style, and reliability; my challenge is to keep them out of the JUNKYARD.
(Although my landlord probably thinks I’m planning to start my OWN junkyard)

The more my car gets driven, the more crap factory parts get replaced with better quality aftermarket parts.

My issue is that this feeds the urge to stockpile hard-to-find replacement parts ...

Museum. Junkyard. Barn. Field. All are the same for a car. Death. They are only alive on the Road.

The road givith and the road taketh away. But if one does not travel the road one does not know the glory that is car.

You speak the truth! I wish more car enthusiasts saw it that way. I love to go to car shows, but sometimes I walk away a little sad. It’s great to see all the beautiful cars, but there are so many that clearly arrived on a trailer, will leave on a trailer, and probably don’t get driven more than once or twice a year when the planets align and the weather is absolutely perfect. I’d much rather see classic cars that are clearly driven and enjoyed. Pristine restorations that cost so much to complete that the owner literally can’t afford to risk the paint job by driving it? Meh, give me the cars with a few paint chips and tires that don’t still have the nibs on them!

I have the same internal debate. I love my car and hate to see it get rock chips in the bumper and hood, ruining the paint. But on the other hand it is made to be driven and dammit I am going to be the one to drive it until there is nothing left.

Add “garaged forever” to that as well
